Week 1

August 27th - 31st

This week we are beginning our flexible grouping rotations! We are so excited to get started and we know all of the students are as well. Please remember that we will NOT be going to school on Monday, September 3rd for Labor Day. Here is a link to our REVISED school calendar:

Here are a few of the things we will be working on this week:

Spelling List: admire, magnet, contest, method, custom, rally, soccer, engine, sudden, finger, accident, mitten, intend, fabric, flatten, rascal, gutter, mammal, happen, cannon  CHALLENGE: dungeon, magnify, festival, thunderstorm, injury

Math: In math we will be working on refreshing/learning our multiplication and division facts. It is important to work with your child on these every night because we all know if you don't use it, you lose it! We will also be working on learning place value from millions to hundredths. Here is a link to some fun multiplication games:

Reading: We will be focusing on learning comprehension strategies to help students with understanding and monitoring their reading. The strategies are metacognition, schema, inferences, determining importance, questioning, visualizing, and synthesizing. We will also be reading an excerpt from Because of Winn Dixie.

Language: We are learning the four types of sentences: declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exlamatory. Declarative sentences are simple statements. Imperative statements give a command. Interrogative statements ask a question. Exlamatory sentences show excitement and end in an exclamation point.

Science: We are focusing on plant and animal cells in science. You can find information about them in Chapter 1 Lesson 1 in our science book.

Social Studies: We are learning about primary and secondary sources, artifacts, and map skills.
