Reading Logs

Reading is a huge part of your child’s education and also their success in all areas of his/her life. Because of this, reading instruction is one of the highest priorities in our classrooms. Research shows that one of the most effective ways to improve your child’s reading is by simply… reading! When children take time for independent reading, they increase their vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and interest in reading. Therefore, students will be required to complete a reading log for homework each night. Students will be assigned to read 20 minutes for 5 nights a week (Monday through Friday). This reading log will be given a weekly grade for completion. Parents or guardians must sign the reading log each night for students to receive credit. Students don’t have to read just novels for their reading logs. They can read magazines, newspapers, textbooks, etc. and use that on their reading logs. Our school also has a fabulous online book program called MyOn Reader. Just ask your child about it and they will tell you that they love it!  Also it is encouraged for your child to have a public library card. Our school and surrounding community is very closely located to our fantastic new library and would be a great place to take your child to pick out new books for them to read.

Portland Public Library:
Our Portland Public Library is an excellent resource for students in our area. We are so extremely close to it that most of our students can simply walk over! Their children's book area is really great with some excellent seating as well (Check out the cool chairs!). Also, the library has 12 kindles to lend, 2 of which are for junior readers! You can also download ebooks for your ereaders through the public library if you have a library card. Contact the library for more details.
MyOn Reader:
MyOn is an excellent website for students to read books online. It can read books to them as well. They will need to login with their username and password:
AR Student Login:
Here is the link to the AR testing site so students may take AR quizzes at home. Students will need to put in their username and password to login:
Renaissance Home Connect:
Home Connect allows you to track your child's progress toward meeting his/her 9 weeks AR points goal.  Parents use the child's username and password to login.  Parents can sign up to receive an email after your child takes a quiz during the school day.  Parents and students can see the percent correct, how many points have been earned, the average book level being read, the number of quizzes passed/taken, total words read, and the results of their last quiz.
