Reading: We will be working on cause and effect this week. Our story is The Stranger.
Language: We are working on action and linking verbs. Words that show actions are called action verbs (hit, regretted, walked, sat). Linking verbs do not show actions. They tell what the subject is or what the subject is like. Common linking verbs are: am, is, are, was, were.

Language: We are working on plural possessive nouns. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. A plural possessive noun shows ownership, such as the cats' toys (more than one cat), the babies' diapers (more than one baby), etc. They add an apostrophe after the s.

Language: We are working on common and proper nouns. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. A common noun is a general noun such as boy, girl, dog, school. A proper noun is a specific noun such as a name (Watt Hardison Elementary, Mrs. Renfro, etc.). A proper noun always starts with a capital letter.
Science: We are beginning Chapter 1 Lesson 3: Energy Needs in Ecosystems. We will be learning about food chains and webs, and how animals rely on one another for the energy to live.

Language: We are working on identifying the subject and predicate of sentences. The subject is who or what the sentence is about. The predicate is what they did. You can identify the predicate by first finding the verb in the sentence. We will also be working on writing our own complete sentences.

Reading: We will be focusing on learning comprehension strategies to help students with understanding and monitoring their reading. The strategies are metacognition, schema, inferences, determining importance, questioning, visualizing, and synthesizing. We will also be reading an excerpt from Because of Winn Dixie.
Language: We are learning the four types of sentences: declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exlamatory. Declarative sentences are simple statements. Imperative statements give a command. As we wait for the school year to begin, we would love for you to consider volunteering some of your time at our school this year. We welcome any help you may offer, no matter how much or little time you have to dedicate. Here are some of the things that volunteers can help with:
- working with small groups of students on books, multiplication facts, educational games, etc.
- helping with various tasks such as cutting, copying, sorting, etc.
- helping with classroom parties
- chaperoning field trips
- assisting with special classroom activities and projects
- sharing an area of expertise or hobby with the students (Fab Friday)
